Press release on the public statements of the President of the Republic Aleksandar Vu?i? addressed to Professor Dr. Miodrag A. Jovanovi?
We, the members of the Serbian Association for the Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy, express our deep concern regarding the statements of the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu?i?, delivered on June 12, 2023, on one of the televisions with a national frequency, which were directed to Professor Miodrag A. Jovanovi?, a member and the former President of our Association. Words of disparagement, insults, and an attempt to discredit Professor Jovanovi? came shortly after Prof. Jovanovi? read the proclamation of the academic community, which directed support for civil protests against violence, signed by more than a thousand members of the academic community. With baseless and disparaging statements, the President of the Republic insulted Professor Jovanovi? and damaged his reputation, the Serbian Association for the Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy, and the entire academic community. We condemn the baseless and insulting claims publicly addressed to Professor Jovanovi?. Verbal violence from the highest instance of government not only hurts the individual dignity of a university teacher and the reputation of academic institutions but also violates freedom of speech, the culture of dialogue and morality in Serbia, without which it is not possible to re-establish a decent and normal society.
