The 31st World Congress of the International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy (IVR 2024) was held under the theme of “The Rule of Law, Justice, and the Future of Democracy” with scholars from 55 countries at Soongsil University from July 7 (Sun) to 12 (Fri), Seoul, Republic of Korea.

At the IVR 2024 congress, plenary speakers included Michael J. Sandel (Harvard University), Young-Joon Kwon (Justice of the Supreme Court of Korea), Martin Krygier (UNSW Sydney), Claudina Orunesu (Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plat), Julie Saada (Sciences Po Paris), Yuko Kamishima (Ritsumeikan University), Maria Grahn-Farley (Gothenburg University). Also, the Special Panel on Gender and Law was presented by Laura Rosenbury (President of Barnard College), Shazia Choudhry, Hyunah Yang (Seoul National University), and Yun-Ru Chen (National Taiwan University). As for the Special Panel on Regional Section, Yanlin DU (Jilin University, China) and Ronaldo Porto Macedo Jr. (University of São Paulo Law School, Brazil) presented. The IVR President’s Plenary Panel, chaired by President Matthias Mahlmann (University of Zurich), addressed the topic of Democracy in War and Peace and included panelists Sergiy Maximov (Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University), Amalia Amaya National Autonomous University of Mexico), John Mikhail (Georgetown University), and Jin-Sook Yun (Soongsil University).

The award lecture was given by Gerald J. Postema (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill), who won the IVR Book Prize for his book Law’s Rule-The Nature, Value, and Viability of the Rule of Law (Oxford University Press, 2023). The Young Scholar Prize was awarded to Yuichiro Mori (Hokkaido University), and he delivered a lecture. Many scholars, including Ulfrid Neumann (former IVR president, Goethe-University Frankfurt), Albert H.Y. Chen (University of Hong Kong), Mathieu Deflem (University of South Carolina) and Jun-Hyeok Kwak (Sun Yat-sen University), presented in special workshops and working groups. IVR 2024 congress was an opportunity for legal philosophers and social philosophers, including scholars of constitutional law, criminal law, civil law, commercial law, international law, and a wide range of academic fields, to present and strengthen cooperation with fellow scholars. Their participation served as a significant contribution to the World and Korean academics. We would like to thank all the presenters, discussants, and participants.
